A Trauma-Informed Approach: What Domestic Violence Court Professionals Need to Know

Moderator: Katie Crank, Center for Court Innovation

Faculty: Rachel White-Domain, JD, National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health

What does a “trauma-informed approach” mean for domestic violence court professionals? More than just a buzzword, taking a trauma-informed approach often requires a deep shift in how we think about our work, as well as a new set of practical skills.

Developed by the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health (NCDVTMH), the Trauma-Informed Legal Advocacy (TILA) Project offers guidance on applying trauma-informed principles to working with survivors of domestic violence in the context of legal proceedings.

Using a scenario-based approach, the TILA project offers a framework and practical skills for doing trauma-informed work. Each scenario employs a simple two-step analysis, considering what might be happening from the perspective of the person we are working with, and what practical strategies might help.

During this webinar for DV court professionals, we will practice TILA skills using scenarios on the following topics:

  1. Traumatic Triggers
  2. Trauma, Memory & Trust-Building
  3. Emotional Safety Planning for Court
  4. Reflective Practice for Legal Professionals
  5. When Someone is Experiencing Emotional Distress
