New Resource – Fact Sheet: The Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence and Substance Use

While research suggests there may be a relationship between experiencing intimate partner violence and using substances, prevalence studies tell us little about why this may occur. Recent research on substance use coercion provides insights into ways that abusive partners utilize the stigma surrounding substance use to further isolate, harm, and undermine survivors. This fact sheet highlights key findings from prevalence studies and discusses them in the context of substance use coercion. It is a companion to NCDVTMH’s “The Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence and Substance Use: An Applied Research Paper.”
