Effect of Trauma-Informed Services

The Women, Co-Occurring Disorders and Violence (WCDV) project
was a major federal effort to develop better strategies to address the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs of women who also have a history of physical or sexual abuse.  After a twelve-month evaluation, the investigators concluded that women who participated in specific, trauma-informed interventions showed more significant improvement in mental health and substance use than women who did not receive the intervention.  The results can be found in:

Morrisey, Joseph, E. Jackson, A. Ellis, H. Amaro, V. Brown, and L. Najavits.  (2005).  Twelve-month outcomes of trauma-informed interventions for women with co-occurring disorders.  Psychiatric Services 56(10), 1213-1222.  Links to this and other evaluation studies associated with the project can be found here.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study

The ACE Study is a decade-long and ongoing collaboration between Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Preventive Medicine in San Diego, California, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  It reveals a link between childhood emotional experiences and adult physical and mental health as adults, as well as the major causes of adult mortality in the United States.  Visit the ACE Study web site for information about the study, for ACE-related publications, and/or for a list of recommended books.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder

Recently, the media has reported on studies that examined the prevalence of Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) that may be associated with violent outbursts. Edward Gondolf, Ed.D., M.P.H., has written a paper cautioning the judicial system against considering treatment of the disorder as an alternative to court-imposed interventions for batterers. The article will appear in Court Review later this year. Click here to download a pre-publication copy.

Mental Illness Among Prison and Jail Inmates

A study released in September 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics found that more than half of all prison and jail inmates have mental health problems.  Click here to download a copy of the report.
