Resources - Working with Survivors Living with Trauma and/or Mental Illness

The aftermath of partner violence. This book chapter examines how researchers have defined and measured the consequences of partner violence and how different definitions of scope and methodology have produced different perspectives on the problem. The chapter also documents the extent and severity of psychological outcomes of partner violence presented in different studies, explores factors that mediate between partner violence and outcomes, and reviews the social impact of partner violence on marital relations, the medical and criminal justice systems, and intergenerational family patterns of violence. The author comments on the intervention implications of the research. Giles-Sims, J. (1998). In J.L. Jasinski and L.M. Williams (Eds), Partner Violence: A Comprehensive Review of 20 Years of Research (44-72). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

Healing the Trauma of Abuse. This workbook is a practical, step-by-step guide through the recovery and healing process for women who have experienced sexual, emotional, or physical abuse in childhood and/or adulthood.  It is based on an approach to trauma recovery developed by Maxine Harris and the clinicians at Community Connections in Washington, D.C.  The community of women who developed this model include many who have experienced trauma themselves.  Copeland, ME, & Harris, M. (2000). Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publishers.

Council of State Governments. (2006). Lexington, KY.
