From Power Over to Power With: Applying a Trauma-Informed Approach to Our Work

This webinar will highlight the work of Rainbow Services, a large domestic violence agency in San Pedro, CA, as they undertook the process of transforming their organizational culture and services to incorporate a trauma-informed approach. Speakers will discuss the process of utilizing trauma-informed principles to support staff, as staff, in turn, are asked to do so with the participants they serve and will highlight the role of parallel process and reflective practice. Presenters will also discuss the evaluation conducted by the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health, including an analysis of staff and survivor experiences as Rainbow Services shifted its organizational culture to one that was trauma informed.

Elizabeth Eastlund, LCSW, Executive Director, Rainbow Services
Elizabeth Eastlund (LCSW) joined Rainbow Services as the Director of Programs in 2006 and became the Executive Director in 2015. She began her social work career working for Skid Row Housing Trust in the Los Angeles. Trauma theory and harm reduction philosophy have assisted her in developing supportive housing programs for those who have experienced interpersonal trauma. She has been implementing trauma-informed and harm reduction approaches at Rainbow since 2007. Examining the intersection of DV and homelessness is critical in her work. Elizabeth earned her BSW from CSULB, her MSW from UCLA, and became an LCSW in 2008.
Eleanor Lyon, PhD, Senior Research Consultant, NCDVTMH
Eleanor Lyon (Ph.D) is the senior research consultant for the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health. Dr. Lyon retired from the University of Connecticut, School of Social Work in 2011, where she served as Director of the Institute for Violence Prevention and Reduction. Since 2011 she has consulted on research and evaluation issues with state and national organizations, including Futures Without Violence and the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. In 2014, she and Jill Davies co-authored Domestic Violence Advocacy: Complex Lives, Difficult Choices
